I don’t know about you, but I have always found doing new things fairly stressful. Especially as a child. As a child I tried hard to avoid anything new, especially if I thought I would be bad at it. I didn’t want to fail. I didn’t want to mess up. Somehow, I had the idea that if I was not good at something that it reflected on who I am as a person. So, I avoided a lot of things.
As I grew older, I found I had to learn new things, but still I tried to keep the things that I learned in a certain comfort zone. For example, I have always had a passion about learning new treatment techniques and philosophies for my work. My motivation to help more people overrode my desire to not fail. 😉 But, I did avoid things such as new sports.
Is anyone out there a gymnast? I was, and I devoted much of my younger life to hours and hours of working out in my gym. This helped me to excel and stand out as a gymnast, but if you would ask me to be on your softball team, you couldn’t pay me to be on it. Gymnasts are notorious (at least among my team) for having poor hand-eye-ball coordination skills, and I was (and still am) no exception.
Now, years later, I find myself stretching to find ways to reach more people and teach them what I’ve learned. And although I have been on Facebook for a number of years, I only used FB as a way to connect with friends; I never really put myself out there. I even stopped posting pictures of my children years ago. I found myself wanting to keep myself more private.
And now, I find myself in new territory regarding using social media for work. I recognize that these platforms are designed in such a way that people like me can reach, educate, connect, and ideally help people in large numbers.
I find myself feeling pulled to jump into a new way of putting myself out there. You may have seen that I started a new Facebook group called Holistic Health Your Way. I may have even invited you (and I do hope you join). Maybe you read that I am intending to offer a lot of value for anyone who wants to join our community.
Holistic Health Your Way FB Group
So, today I started the first of my ABC-themed Facebook LIVE series… and I flubbed a bit. I started with Anatomy of the Pelvis, and it was all I could do to keep my 20+ year-old model from falling apart. I felt like I was less than eloquent, but I did it. And even though I love teaching… teaching in this platform is new to me. Putting myself out there in a vulnerable way is uncomfortable.
But that is OK. I am able to see that the benefits outweigh my discomfort. I know the more FB LIVEs I do, the more comfortable I will become in front of the camera. And I know that whoever watches, even when I am far from perfect, will gain benefit from learning what I have to teach them.
Truthfully, learning and stretching to do things that are new to us is one way to keep our brain functioning in a healthy way. So, for you and for me, I will continue to put myself out there on social media. Who knows, maybe one day you will even see me on Instagram TV 😉
And, by the way, I do hope you join my new FB Group. I hope you use it as a way to connect with and support others, to learn about your body and yourself and just by being a member of the group, you will receive random specials and freebies!
In Peace and Kindness,
Jen
